Filyos Maintenance Center: Backbone of Black Sea Energy Operations

The Filyos Maintenance Center, located at the Zonguldak Filyos Port, has become a central hub for Turkey’s expanding energy fleet. According to Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, the center oversees the maintenance, repair, and testing of key assets, including the Osman Gazi Floating Production Unit (FPU), drilling and seismic vessels, subsea systems, and critical equipment—all managed through Turkey’s own engineering capabilities. This initiative is a crucial step towards achieving energy independence, as each component of the operational chain is being strengthened domestically.

Key Projects and Operational Developments

Preparing Yıldırım and Osman Gazi for Service

Currently, the center is finalizing preparations for two major vessels. The Yıldırım drilling ship, whose tower was removed to pass through the straits, is being readied for its first mission in the Black Sea, anticipated to commence in April. Meanwhile, Turkey’s first floating production platform, the Osman Gazi, is on track to begin operations at the Sakarya Gas Field in the third quarter of the year.

Comprehensive Facilities and Capabilities

Spanning 60,000 square meters, the Filyos Maintenance Center offers a wide range of services for fleet vessels, subsea systems, and various equipment. Its facilities include machine processing, welding, sandblasting-painting, and surface coating workshops. Additionally, the center houses hydraulic, electrical, and non-destructive testing units, supporting maintenance for both drilling equipment and ship propellers.

Advanced Testing and International Standards

Specialized Test Pools

The center features dedicated test pools and equipment for trialing drilling machines, underwater robots, and wellhead control systems. This infrastructure ensures that all tools and machinery undergo rigorous assessments before deployment in the field, enhancing operational reliability.

Commitment to Global Quality

All activities at the Filyos Maintenance Center are conducted in accordance with internationally recognized standards, such as API Q1 and API Spec 7-2. These protocols underpin the safety, quality, and continuity of maintenance and testing processes within the oil and gas sector.

Supporting a Self-Reliant Energy Sector

The center plays a pivotal role in keeping Turkey’s deep-sea drilling and seismic research vessels ready for duty, reducing maintenance times and boosting operational efficiency. By minimizing reliance on foreign services and lowering costs, the Filyos Maintenance Center advances Turkey’s goal of a fully independent energy sector.

Minister Bayraktar emphasized that the center’s robust infrastructure supports continuous exploration and production capabilities, both in Turkish waters and beyond. The integration of high-value technical services within the country further strengthens energy security and sustainable growth.
