Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu Announces Comprehensive 5G Rollout Plan
Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, has outlined Turkey’s roadmap for the introduction of 5G technology. The Minister stated, “We aim to deliver 5G services to every part of our country within two years of receiving the first 5G signal on April 1, 2026.”
Emphasizing the strategic importance of 5G, Uraloğlu described it as a foundation for boosting production capacity, service quality, and technological competitiveness. He noted that following the 5G authorization tender held on October 16, Turkey raised 3.534 billion USD, which will contribute to the expansion of the nation’s digital infrastructure.
5G to Drive Transformation Across Multiple Sectors
Impact on Industry, Agriculture, and Media
Uraloğlu highlighted that 5G will significantly increase speed, capacity, and service quality in mobile communications. He explained, “The transition to 5G will enable our citizens to enjoy faster, more reliable, and uninterrupted connectivity.”
Beyond communication, 5G technology is expected to accelerate transformation in various sectors. Uraloğlu cited examples such as industrial robots, autonomous driving technologies, and smart city applications. He added that smart factories would optimize production processes, while smart agriculture solutions would enhance sustainability and productivity. In the media sector, journalists will be able to broadcast live in 8K quality and transmit high-resolution data from the field in seconds.
Commitment to Local and National Technology Development
The Minister also underlined the importance of ensuring that Turkey does not just consume but also develops and produces 5G technology domestically. Uraloğlu pointed to government-supported initiatives, such as the 2018 ‘End-to-End Domestic and National 5G Communication Network Project’ launched in cooperation with HTK (Communication Technologies Cluster) and TÜBİTAK, which has led to the development of critical 5G infrastructure components.
He further explained that domestic 5G core networks and base stations have been successfully deployed in projects like HASDAL, supported by the UDHAM research center and TÜRKSAT. Regulatory requirements will also ensure that operators increase the use of certified local products up to 60% over time, and up to 30% of national communication products depending on market conditions. Additionally, investments in private 5G mobile networks will be required to prioritize components from national communication technology providers.
