Twin Deep-Sea Drilling Vessels Join Türkiye’s Expanding Energy Fleet

Türkiye strengthens its energy sovereignty with two advanced seventh-generation ships

New high-capacity vessels place Türkiye among the world’s top four energy fleets

Türkiye has bolstered its offshore energy capabilities by acquiring two identical seventh-generation deep-sea drilling vessels. The newly purchased ships, owned by Türkiye Petrolleri, are expected to play a vital role in achieving energy independence.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar stated that the first of the twin ships will arrive in Türkiye in about two months. “With this addition, Türkiye is now among the world’s top four most modern energy fleets,” he noted.

Modern Technology Meets Strategic Vision

Designed for operations at depths of up to 12,000 meters, the vessels each measure 228 meters in length and 42 meters in width. Equipped with helipads and living quarters for 200 personnel, they were built in South Korea in 2024 and are capable of uninterrupted drilling operations until 2029.

The ships are classified as seventh-generation high-capacity units, reflecting cutting-edge marine technology and operational durability.

Comprehensive Technical Assessment

The selection process for the vessels involved meticulous technical evaluations, including inspections of the drilling platforms, engine rooms, deck infrastructure, and underwater systems. Tests ensured functionality, safety, and long-term operational advantages like cost-efficiency, flexibility, and time-saving features.

Deployment Timeline Announced

According to Minister Bayraktar, following certification and accreditation, one ship will be operational by January and the other by February.

Türkiye Climbs to Global Top Four

Sharing the news on social media, Minister Bayraktar emphasized the significance of the move: “Our fleet is growing. We are adding two technologically advanced, twin deep-sea drilling vessels to our energy arsenal. This milestone reinforces our position in the Mavi Vatan and expands our exploration and production capabilities for the Black Sea and beyond.”

He added that Türkiye is now one of the world’s top four countries in terms of fleet modernization, operational scope, and technological capacity, aligning with its national goal of becoming fully energy independent.

Fleet Overview and Strategic Importance

Prior to the new acquisition, Türkiye ranked fifth globally in energy fleet strength. Its current fleet includes the Fatih, Yavuz, Kanuni, and Abdülhamid Han deep-sea drilling vessels, which are actively deployed in the Sakarya Gas Field in the Black Sea.

Supporting units such as the Oruç Reis and Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa seismic research vessels, 11 auxiliary ships, a construction vessel, and a floating production platform further enhance Türkiye’s maritime energy infrastructure.
