The Turkish seismic vessel returns to Filyos after its first intercontinental mission
234 days at sea collecting seismic data
The Oruç Reis Seismic Research Vessel has completed its first intercontinental assignment in Somalia, returning to Turkish waters after a 234-day mission. The ship departed from Filyos Port on October 4, 2024, and completed its work on June 6, 2025, after collecting three-dimensional seismic data across 4,464 square kilometers in three maritime zones.
From Mogadishu to the Turkish Straits
After a farewell ceremony at Mogadishu Port, Oruç Reis set sail on June 15, 2025. The vessel passed through the Suez Canal and entered the Mediterranean Sea. It is scheduled to pass the Dardanelles Strait on July 2 and the Bosphorus on July 3, with arrival at Filyos expected on July 4.
Escorted by naval support ships
The return voyage is supported by several Turkish Navy vessels including Zağanos Paşa, Sancar, Ataman, TCG Giresun, TCG Göksu, and the logistics support ship TCG Üsteğmen Arif Ekmekçi.
Scheduled for maintenance at Filyos
Upon arrival at Filyos Port, Oruç Reis will undergo routine maintenance and technical checks before being reassigned to future missions in the region or abroad.
Nationally built, internationally capable
Commissioned in 2017 using domestic resources, the Oruç Reis is capable of conducting both 2D and 3D seismic surveys for oil and gas exploration. The ship measures 87 meters in length, 23 meters in width, and 34 meters in height. It also plays a key role in continental shelf and crustal studies, reinforcing Türkiye’s maritime research capabilities.
