Sirkeci-Kazlıçeşme Rail Line Completes Its Second Year

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the Sirkeci-Kazlıçeşme rail line, which began operation on 26 February 2024, has transported a total of 8,056,569 passengers to date. The line, which runs through Istanbul’s historic districts, was highlighted as a significant contributor to the city’s tourism sector.

Preservation of Historical Heritage and Modern Transport Integration

The 8.3-kilometre route was constructed with careful attention to preserving the city walls and other cultural heritage sites. The line comprises eight stations: Sirkeci, Cankurtaran, Kumkapı, Yenikapı, Cerrahpaşa, Kocamustafapaşa, Yedikule, and Kazlıçeşme. Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that this corridor not only facilitates daily transport but also helps showcase the city’s cultural legacy to visitors.

Daily Operations and Capacity

The rail line operates 83 trips daily, from 06:00 to 23:00, with trains running every 25 minutes. The travel time from Sirkeci to Kazlıçeşme is approximately 17 minutes, while the return journey takes about 25 minutes. Each train has a capacity of 1,637 passengers.

Expansion of Public Spaces and Green Areas

The project area covers 215,000 square metres, of which 92,450 square metres are dedicated to railway operations. The remaining 122,550 square metres have been developed as pedestrian walkways, bicycle and scooter paths, as well as recreational and rest areas. This transformation has created a significant green space in the heart of Istanbul, accessible to all residents.

Minister Uraloğlu noted that, in addition to the rail network, improvements were made to pedestrian and road underpasses and new areas for social activities were established, all aimed at enhancing urban comfort and mobility.
