Significant Milestone in Renewable Energy Production

Turkey has set a new benchmark in renewable-based electricity production, according to a statement from Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar. In March, the country recorded a total electricity generation of 29.95 billion kilowatt-hours, of which 19.46 billion kilowatt-hours originated from renewable sources. This figure marks the highest monthly renewable electricity generation ever achieved in Turkey, with nearly two-thirds of total production coming from renewables.

Breakdown of Renewable Sources

Hydropower Leads the Way

Hydroelectric power plants contributed the largest share, producing 10.6 billion kilowatt-hours, which accounted for 35.4% of total electricity generation during the month.

Solar and Wind Power Growth

Solar energy supplied 3.24 billion kilowatt-hours, while wind power added 3.67 billion kilowatt-hours. Together, hydropower, wind, and solar sources reached their highest combined output for any March on record.

Focus on Domestic and Renewable Resources

In March, the share of domestically generated electricity stood at 77.3%, while renewables accounted for 65% of the total output. Minister Bayraktar emphasized that Turkey’s investments in local and renewable sources aim to meet rising energy demand while minimizing carbon emissions.

Future Goals for Renewable Capacity

Minister Bayraktar also highlighted ongoing work on a new long-term energy strategy, aiming to build a modern energy architecture with renewables as a cornerstone. He noted that with upcoming targets to be announced by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey plans to exceed its previous goal of 120,000 megawatts of installed solar and wind capacity.
