Türkiye‘s energy sector is poised for a significant milestone as the Çağrı Bey Drillship prepares to initiate the nation’s first overseas deep-sea exploration in Somali waters. This operation highlights Turkey’s growing ambition to become a global actor in the energy industry.

Comprehensive Seismic Research Led to Drilling Decision

Preceding the drilling operation, the Oruç Reis Seismic Research Vessel conducted a detailed survey in the region. Over a period of 234 days, Oruç Reis collected seismic data across three distinct offshore blocks, covering a total area of 4,464 square kilometers. The data analysis identified a promising location for the drilling works, paving the way for the upcoming mission.

Drillship’s Journey and Drilling Plan

The Çağrı Bey embarked from Turkey on 15 February, with an estimated 53-day voyage to Mogadishu Port. Upon arrival, a formal ceremony will be held, attended by Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and senior Somali officials. Following the event, the vessel will proceed to the designated drilling site.

CURAD-1 Well: A Notable Endeavour

The initial well, named CURAD-1—after a Somali term for ‘the first child born in a family’—is located 372 kilometers from Mogadishu. The operation will involve drilling at a depth of 3,495 meters of water, continuing 4,005 meters beneath the seabed, for a total depth of 7,500 meters. If completed as planned, CURAD-1 will become the world’s second deepest offshore well.

Support Fleet and Safety Measures

The drilling project is set to last 288 days and will involve a rotation of 500 field personnel, including 180 crew on Çağrı Bey, 60 on support vessels, and 10 in onshore services. Support ships Altan, Korkut, and Sancar will accompany the drillship. Additionally, Turkish Navy vessels TCG Sancaktar, TCG Gökova, and TCG Bafra will ensure operational security.

Strategic Cooperation and Bilateral Benefits

Minister Bayraktar emphasized that this venture not only advances Turkey’s vision of being a global energy leader but also strengthens the historical and strategic ties between Turkey and Somalia. He noted, “This joint effort will serve the welfare of both nations and further reinforce our brotherly relations.” Bayraktar expressed hope for positive outcomes from the operation, benefiting both countries.
