5G-Integrated Smart Road Pilot Project Moves to Testing Stage
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu has announced that a critical milestone has been reached in the Development of a Central Software Platform for Cooperative and Intelligent Transport Systems in Turkey. The pilot corridor, spanning 40 kilometres between Istanbul Hasdal Junction and Istanbul Airport, now features 5G infrastructure installed at 19 strategic points, allowing for comprehensive real-time system tests.
Enhancing Road Safety and Efficiency with Advanced Technologies
Pilot Corridor and Infrastructure Achievements
The project, initiated in partnership with the Transport, Maritime and Communication Research Center (UDHAM), General Directorate of Highways, and Türksat, is distinguished by its fully local and national research and development approach. According to Minister Uraloğlu, the completed 5G and fibre network installations will enable the monitoring and testing of the system’s components in real time along the entire route.
Real-Time Data and User Notification
The smart road system is designed to instantly detect incidents such as accidents, stationary vehicles, black ice, fallen objects, or lane closures. Road users will receive immediate notifications, supported by an integrated suite of cameras, road sensors, artificial intelligence-based image processing, event detection, meteorological information systems, and variable message signs. These technologies aim to increase safety, optimise road usage, and minimise unnecessary delays for travellers.
Local Software Platform and Technological Independence
Future Development and Autonomous Driving Support
Minister Uraloğlu emphasised the importance of integrating the latest technological advancements and global trends into Turkey’s road infrastructure. The project also supports the adaptation to autonomous driving by preparing roadways with necessary intelligent technologies. All related systems will be managed through a locally developed Central Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Software Platform and Mobile Application, soon to be launched at the General Directorate of Highways’ main ITS Centre.
Data Analytics and User Benefits
The new platform, developed by Türksat, will serve as the operational core of the ITS, analysing data from hundreds of sensors via embedded business intelligence and decision support systems. This will further elevate road safety and efficiency. Additionally, the Highways Mobile Application will allow citizens to access up-to-date traffic and safety information in real time.
