5G Services Officially Inaugurated at Presidential Complex
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu attended a ceremony at the Presidential Complex to officially launch 5G services in Turkey. President Erdoğan announced plans to initially activate 5G in 81 provincial centers, with the goal of making it available nationwide within two years.
Digital Sovereignty and National Security in the Data Age
During his speech, President Erdoğan highlighted the evolving nature of sovereignty in today’s world, stating that “sovereignty is no longer limited to geography and physical territory.” He emphasized that rapid advances in technology and digitalization have transformed traditional concepts of sovereignty. “Political stability, economic independence, military deterrence, and digital sovereignty are inseparable in the data age,” Erdoğan underlined, referencing recent global conflicts as reminders of the critical importance of cybersecurity.
Expanding Digital Infrastructure
President Erdoğan noted that over the past two decades, Turkey has made significant investments in its digital infrastructure. “We have increased the length of our fiber network from 81,000 kilometers in 2002 to 657,000 kilometers by the third quarter of 2025,” he said. The number of broadband subscribers rose from 3,000 to 98 million, and mobile subscribers grew to nearly 100 million. Over 55 million citizens now use secure internet services, and Turkey ranks first in Europe for average monthly mobile usage time.
Cybersecurity as a Pillar of National Policy
The President also referred to the recent establishment of the Cybersecurity Directorate and highlighted ongoing efforts by law enforcement, intelligence, and other government agencies to strengthen defenses against cyber threats. Erdoğan stressed, “We see cybersecurity not merely as a reaction to threats but as an integral part of our national security.”
Technological Achievements and Future Goals
Erdoğan spoke about Turkey’s progress in technology, pointing to the launch of Türksat 6A, the nation’s first indigenous communications satellite, which made Turkey one of only 11 countries capable of manufacturing its own satellites. The President commended the contributions of engineers, firms, and especially young people to these achievements.
He also highlighted Turkey’s expanding role in exporting technology and innovation, referencing the success of Teknofest youth as a model for the world. “We declared full mobilization in technology, believing in our nation’s bright minds,” Erdoğan stated.
Nationwide 5G Rollout Roadmap
Discussing the 5G rollout, Erdoğan explained that preparations began in 2016, with initial tests in 2018 and pilot applications in major venues and events. “We have equipped both urban and rural areas with 5G infrastructure, enabling high-speed and high-capacity connectivity across the country,” he said. The nationwide implementation will proceed in phases, aiming for complete coverage within two years.
