Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu has provided details on the 2025 operations of the Main Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (AAKKM), operating under the Directorate General of Maritime Affairs.

Extensive Operations and Rapid Response

According to Minister Uraloğlu, AAKKM coordinated 634 maritime search and rescue missions in 2025, successfully rescuing 7,861 individuals and providing aid to 101 injured persons. The centre operates around the clock, ensuring uninterrupted coordination of search and rescue operations for maritime and aviation incidents within Turkey’s area of responsibility.

Uraloğlu further noted, “Our centre also coordinates with international search and rescue units for Turkish-flagged vessels or those carrying Turkish citizens in distress anywhere in the world, maintaining 24/7 operations, including weekends and official holidays.”

Satellite-Assisted Systems and International Integration

Global COSPAS-SARSAT Collaboration

Uraloğlu emphasised the role of satellite-assisted technologies in enabling rapid intervention: “The International Satellite-Aided Search and Rescue System COSPAS-SARSAT swiftly detects the identity and location of vessels, aircraft, or individuals sending distress signals. Thanks to our satellite-supported system, response teams can be mobilised within minutes.”

Turkey’s Role Among 36 MCC Countries

Turkey is one of 36 countries hosting a Mission Control Centre (MCC). Beyond its own jurisdiction, Turkey’s MCC provides free support to neighbouring countries such as Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Georgia, and Ukraine. The ministry is also working to expand this service to additional countries.

Enhanced Capabilities in the Eastern Mediterranean

Minister Uraloğlu highlighted that the Turkish Search and Rescue Region has been expanded in the Eastern Mediterranean, significantly boosting intervention capacity in the area.

Technological Advancements in Search and Rescue

The ministry is advancing the development of a Search and Rescue Portal Project, which will integrate real-time tracking of all search and rescue assets, process meteorological data, and support decision-making with artificial intelligence technologies.

Uraloğlu concluded by affirming that the AAKKM, with its robust technical infrastructure and international coordination, will continue its life-saving mission without interruption, prioritising the safety of human life.
