Zero Waste Initiative Reaches Global Recognition

Minister Alparslan Bayraktar highlighted Türkiye’s progress in sustainable energy, pointing to approximately 2,500 megawatts of installed capacity for energy production from waste. This process is actively underway at nearly 300 facilities across the country, playing a crucial role in energy security and reducing dependency on external resources.

From National Movement to International Platform

The Zero Waste Initiative, launched in 2017 under the patronage of Emine Erdoğan, has evolved into a prominent global brand. On 14 December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly accepted Türkiye’s proposal to declare 30 March as International Zero Waste Day. Minister Bayraktar emphasized that, in a time of global energy crises and regional geopolitical tensions, efficient energy use and integrating waste into the circular economy have become even more significant.

Environmental and Operational Achievements

Minister Bayraktar outlined the initiative’s environmental impact, noting significant reductions in emissions and external energy dependence, and a boost to the circular economy. In 2024 alone, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources recovered 5,000 tons of waste, saved 10.8 million kWh of energy, and cut 10,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

Over the past six years, more than 26 million tons of waste have been disposed of, with 6.9 million tons recycled and over 1 million tons used as alternative raw materials. Additionally, a Deposit Management System was implemented at the Ministry’s central campus, enabling the return and recycling of plastic, glass, and aluminium packaging bearing the “DOA” logo.

Capacity Building and Future Outlook

To further support sustainable practices, the Ministry has provided training to approximately 11,000 employees to improve consumption habits and waste management. Türkiye is set to host the UN Climate Change Conference (COP31) this year, where the Zero Waste Initiative is expected to gain even greater international attention.

Minister Bayraktar concluded that these efforts align with Türkiye’s civilisational vision and that the Zero Waste Initiative continues to generate positive global impact.
